Put your will in a safe place!Put your will in a SAFE place!

One of the questions we get asked often is where clients should put their wills. We always recommend a fireproof safe. The most important thing is that someone can access the place where your will is kept!

If you leave your will in a safety deposit box, and your family members do not have access to that box, there are extra steps that have to be taken to get access to the will.

If your will is in a safe that your family members don’t have access to, they will have to get the safe opened to present the original will to the court.

If the original will cannot be found, a Louisiana notary must be appointed to search for the lost will (La Civil Code of Procedure article 2854). These steps are expensive and time consuming.
